Give a meaning to your next holiday or week-end! Visit one of the following localities and come back with some more culture or, at least, some nostalgia.


1874 - (25 April) - BOLOGNA - Palazzo Marescalchi (to-day called Palazzo Orlandini), via Asse 1170 (to-day called via Tre Novembre 5/7): place of birth of Guglielmo

1877 - BEDFORD - residence "Colleorton": where Marconi's family moved when he was three years of age

1878 - RUGBY - ? - new change of residence with mother1881 - FIRENZE - Istituto Cavallero, via delle Terme 25: school were he studied (plaque). In this school he became acquainted with LUIGI SOLARI who became his collaborator for all his life

1882 - PORRETTA - place of origin of father where family used to go to the local Spa

1885 - LIVORNO - Istituto Nazionale, via Cairoli 9 (now occupied by a Banca di Roma agency, Palazzo Taddeoli): where he went to school (plaque)

1892 - LIVORNO - viale Regina Margherita 4 (once via del Passeggio 2): where he did his first experiments with electricity

1894 - PONTECCHIO - villa "Griffone": place of his further experiment on return from the family holiday at Andorno on the Alps near Biella (where at the Sanctuary of Oropa he later located the first time of having his idea of trasmitting intelligence through Hertian waves). In this villa in 1895 he managed to transmit his wireless signals beyond the garden hill and learnt of his success by the firing of the local peasant's gun (plaque)

1896 - LONDON - 71 Hereford Road, Bayswater (but also 101 on some documents): place of residence after he emigrated to England (plaque)

1896 - (22 July) - LONDON - Roof of the (then) main post office building in St.Martin's Le-Grand where Marconi demontrated to (Sir) William Preece, Postmaster General, how he could transmit wireless signals to the roof of the Post Office Saving Bank building in Queen Victoria Street

1896 - (September) - SALISBURY PLAIN - place of furter demonstrations to the military in a hut called "the bungalow": distance covered: 1,25 miles.Unfortunately this place is military reserve and cannot be visited; you could visit Stonehenge instead.

1896 - LONDON - 67 Talbot Road, Westbourne Park: new place of residence from the end the year and where Marconi conducted several experiments in the park

1896 - (12 December) - Tornbee Hall: place where (Sir) William Preece gave the historic lecture to the Royal Institution members on Marconi's successful experiments. I have beeb told that this is or was in Commercial Street, London but have not checked out)

1897 - (spring) - BRISTOL - where signals were exchanged between Lavernock Point and the Island of Flatholm in the Bristol channel and later from Penarth to Brean Down (near Weston-super-mare). To commemorate the 9 miles transmission in 1948 a bronze plaque was unveiled by the Cardiff Rotary in the church of St.Lawrence, Lavernock

1897 - DOVER - place of (poor) separate experiments done by the Post Office

1897 - (April) - ISLE OF WIGHT - Needles Hotel, Alum Bay: where Marconi set up the first experimental transreceiving station. (Column)

1897 - ROMA - (July) - Ministero della Marina (Ministry of Maritime) then in Palazzo S.Agostino, via della Scrofa is the place of a wireless trasmitting demonstrations to Navy Minister Benedetto Brin and later to King Umberto I.

1897 - (17 July) - LA SPEZIA - where experiments were carried on for the military from the San Bartolomeo arsenal to the island of Palmaria and subsequently to Portovenere, to the island of Tino and finally to the Italian cruiser San Martino.

1897 - (20 July) - LONDON - 28, Mark Lane, EC3 = registered office of the Wireless Signal and Telegraph Co. Ltd which lated changed its name in Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co.Ltd.

1898 - BOURNEMOUTH - Madeira House (now Royal Court Hotel) to-day used as a convalescent home for Welsh miners. In this place signals were sent and received to ships at sea

1898 - (3 June) - BOURNEMOUTH - the above station was later moved to another house nearby (now demolishwed to build the Bournemouth International Centre) where the first ever paid Marconigram (from Lord Kelvin) was received from Alum Bay transmitter.

1898 - POOLE - Haven Hotel: Sandbanks: place were Marconi lived and did radio experiments for some time. The hotel has sadly been demolished but in the Marconi room of the new Haven Hotel there is a plaque and some memorabilia.

1898 (May) - IRELAND - Ballycastle and Ratlin Island: places where further experiments were conducted at the time

1898 (20-22 July) - KINGSTOWN - locality of early wireless transmission for the Dublin Daily Express in occasion of the Kingstown Regatta.
